Submarine Boat was a World War I emergency yard, developed and operated by Electric Boat Company. It was designed for the mass production of small steel cargo ships, based on a 150-vessel contract from the U.S. Shipping Board.
This program was cut short after the war and the yard only built 118 ships for the U.S. Shipping Board but built the remaining 32 ships anyway, for a private-sector customer.
The ships were all of a single design, 324 feet long by 40 feet wide, with a nominal deadweight of 5,250 tons.
